Yes and No in the Body

Often when we look at a question from another angle the answer gets much clearer. Ever try to make a decision by tossing a coin. Before you toss the coin you think you can't decide. The coin lands. You may feel elated or disappointed at the answer it provides. When trying to make a decision, it can be very helpful to listen to your body as your try out the answers.

Say no to one option. How does that feel? Does the weight of your body sink lower? When you say yes, does your body seem to lift up?

Consider what the consequences of the decision will be. How do the consequences feel? Change the decision. What are the consequences now? Is that something that you feel good about saying yes to?

Your conscious mind is but a small fraction of your thoughts and knowledge. Tap into your greater intelligence by listening to your body. In Malcolm Gladwell's latest book, Blink , he relates a story about a poker experiment. In the experiment, people changed their behavior before they could consciously explain why the change helped them. Your mind is an amazing resource.

The mind often communicates through the body. When you feel lighter, it is not that your organs lost weight; it is the mind using your senses to give you a tangible awareness of joy and freedom. Your body feels heavy. It is not necessarily that you ate a big lunch. It is your mind telling you that a decision “sits heavy” on you. You don't feel good about it. You may not be able to explain why something doesn't feel right. Your mind found something that you don't feel congruent about.

Listen to your mind as it speaks through your body. Try out the answers. Yes. No. What are the consequences? What will yes to the option mean to you? What will no mean? How does that feel?
